I doubt that this is so much of a biased opinion but please read this article just like as a comparison table only. Don’t take it personally. Whatever the distro at the top of minds, it’s all about Linux ;-).
After consistently get the rank # 1 in the Distrowatch Page Hit Rank (PHR), finally, Ubuntu position has been overtaken by PCLinuxOS. PCLinuxOS finally managed to bump Ubuntu from the top of the list since July 2007. Off course, Distrowatch PHR actually is not the one and only in terms "Linux Distro Rank Provider". There is a Google Trends that provided a different chart about Ubuntu and PCLinuxOS popularity.
By personal experience, PCLinuxOS 2007 works out-of-box with a very nice Live CD, 3D support with less configuration and superior in desktop environment.
How about Ubuntu ? Ubuntu and its variants provided same results with the different way. With apt-get features and great community supports, Ubuntu still have an advantage for newbie user, area where PCLinuxOS focused their market share.
Another battle of the Titans are OpenSUSE 10.3 and Mandriva 2008. I take it from the article at tuxmachines.org, Battle of the Titans: Mandriva 2008 vs openSUSE 10.3, The author, Susan get the conclusion that Mandriva 2008 defeated OpenSUSE 10.3 by 4-2 final score. As OpenSUSE loyalist since 1999, I would disagree with Susan’s conclusion, especially with the Installer and Software Management review but I think her review not that bad either. It’s a good review and Susan tried to give a balance comparison.
What the advantages of this battle ? The advantages is the facts that Linux Desktop reasonably more mature, offering fairly polished and stable desktops. If we talked that PCLInuxOS superior in works out-of-box, radically simple as their motto; Ubuntu known as distro with great community support; OpenSUSE known as beautiful desktop and new technology introduction and Mandriva get their popularity as an easier Linux to use for everyone; we only need a few moment that all of advantage will be provided by all of distros and we will happy with this situation.
